The Yearling

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, this beautiful coming-of-age parable explores man’s relation with nature and the meaning of maturity. It focuses on the adventures of twelve-year-old Jody Baxter, a wistful only child growing up in an impoverished family in the Florida Everglades. Jody longs to have a pet, but his mother will not allow it, citing the family’s dire economic circumstances.However, when Jody’s father is bitten by a rattlesnake and is forced to kill a doe, using its liver to absorb the poison, Jody finds himself the caretaker of its orphaned fawn. Conflict in the family arises as the year old deer begins to eat the family’s precious crops. In this beautifully-crafted entertainment for the whole family, Jody’s acceptance of his family’s responsibilities with respect to the yearling represents a painful rite of passage into adulthood.
